Active Zone started in November 2001 and provides daily care for school aged children with a learning disability. Active Zone operates daily ( except Thursday) from 3.30-6pm at the Mencap Centre. The after school club caters for 5-19 year olds with a learning disability. There are fun activities provided on site, many with a curriculum theme so that the children can learn through play. The children also have use of a fully equipped sensory room and outdoor playground equipped with a wheelchair swing.
The children that attend Active zone have a one-one volunteer from local schools who assist the children in daily activities and encourage play and social interaction.
Although centre based the children are taken on occasional trips eg: Tesco to be involved in choosing their snack items, or to Macdonalds.
Any child with a learning disability can attend Active Zone depending on availability. The hours are after school until 6pm. Volunteers are welcomed and can receive application forms from the Mencap Centre. Information on cost and availability can be received by contacting:-
