West Berkshire Mencap Fit Club was started in 2001 as a sports club for children with learning disabilities. The aim of the club was to provide a safe environment for children with learning disabilities in West Berkshire and surrounding areas to enjoy sport during out of school hours, within a structured framework that seeks to develop general fitness.
Fit club runs every Thursday during term time from 4.30pm-6.30pm for children aged 11-16 years with a learning disability.
Fit club aims to provide equal opportunities in sport and fitness for children with a learning disability with or without a physical disability.
Fit club aims to teach skills in all sports such as Hockey, Football, Bowls and Tennis. Each session begins with a general fitness warm up.
We also have a range of visiting sports coaches specialists who run sessions designed to enhance the children's skills.
Keeping fit and active is important to every body but not everybody has access to the same facilities. Fit Club came about as a result of children and parents asking us to provide it so that the children could be actively encouraged to develop a healthy lifestyle which will benefit them now and in the future.
