The number of people with learning disabilities has increased by 1.2% per year over the last 35 years. Since 1965 the number of people with severe learning disabilities has increased by 50%. The number of people with learning disabilities will continue to grow by 1% a year over the next 10 years and they will live longer.
Learning disability is not the same as mental illness, it cannot be cured. Just like everybody else, people with a learning disability have different skills and abilities and each person needs to be treated as an individual.
