West Berkshire Mencap Playscheme started in 1984 and is the biggest Playscheme for children with learning disabilities in this area.
The Playscheme takes children from the ages of 3-19 years old with a very wide range of abilities and needs. Each year over 400 letters are sent out asking volunteers and children to attend. The volunteers are mainly recruited from local schools and colleges and they are given training in subjects such as basic First Aid, communication, health and safety and play. Staff and volunteers are asked to complete Criminal Record Bureau checks and provide references which are taken up.

Volunteer application forms are available from the Mencap Centre. Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated and although there is often a waiting list for Playschemes the children's officers try to ensure that as many volunteers as possible will get a chance to participate.
