Making the most of Life

The Family Advisor Service works with people with a learning disability their parents and carers to help them achieve the services and support that they are entitled to.  This could include benefits, respite care, transport, social and leisure opportunities, transition, moving out of home and finding suitable employment.

Christine Copeland, is the Carers Champion and supports older carers and their adult children. This includes reviewing the annual care plan, to meet the needs of our clients so they receive appropriate services and support at home and in the local community.

Denise Buchan and Kelly Velvick are Relationship Advocates who are developing social skills and opportunities for people with a learning disability in the local community.  This has included running speed mates, an evening meal out at Pop Eyes restaurant and the Toby Carvery. They have also gone bowling and taken a minibus with clients to a ball in Oxford. Follow this link for the latest events and activities….

The Friendship Skills course currently takes place at the Phoenix Centre in Newbury but may be rolled out in other areas in the future as it has proved to be extremely popular.  This course was created with a lot of input from people with learning disabilities who have been able to develop the course in a flexible way to meet their needs.  Besides being very popular and great fun there is a serious element to this course which is about how to behave safely and appropriately in a variety of situations.  We are taught from an early age to be careful of strangers but be friendly to others and it can take time to work out what behaviour is appropriate in each situation.  A lot of the attendees taking this course are vulnerable but they all want to learn and take what ever steps they need to improve their lives, particularly socially, so the course addresses these issues.  The course teaches confidence, raises self esteem and expectancies and enables those attending to live a safer, fuller social life.
